Karabo Poppy Moletsane was born in 1992 in Vereeniging, South Africa. She is a South African illustrator, graphic designer, and road artist. She is now primarily based in Pretoria.

Poppy has a BA in visible communication from the Open Window College of Visible Communication, which she makes use of to inform the South African story by her vibrant work.

With no skilled expertise, after uni, she started freelancing and looking for promoting businesses and design studios who have been additionally centered on exploring an authentically African viewpoint – to no avail. So she set out alone. “That’s when the hearth received lit beneath me, as a result of it wasn’t being completed, and I assumed it was overdue.”

Poppy developed the premise of her illustration type by drawing from her quick environment, particularly the fantastically hand-painted signage of the old fashioned barbershops prevalent all through Africa. They present side-on portraits of individuals, demonstrating what hairstyles you may get, and for Poppy, this was the kind of actually modern African image she was searching for. The opposite defining characteristic of Poppy’s illustration is her energetic line work, bringing vibrancy and motion to each picture.

Poppy has completed work for the Wall Avenue Journal, Google, Coca-Cola, and Nike- together with designing footwear worn by LeBron James. She created the graphics for the primary African collection on Netflix, Queen Sono, and When They See Us. She collaborated with RICH MNISI on a unisex clothes assortment, known as Operating Errands, in 2020. Her Utah Jazz mural is put in in Salt Lake Metropolis, Utah.

In 2021, she was commissioned by Wikipedia, together with Jasmina El Bouamraoui, to design 101 symbols for the twentieth anniversary of Wikipedia.

She was listed on Forbes “30 Underneath 30” listing within the 2019 creatives class. Her 2019 designs for Nike gained the BASA Past Border Partnership Award. In 2020, she was named “Inventive of the Yr” by Between 10and5. Her murals are displayed as city installations throughout Johannesburg, and have appeared in Occasions Sq., in music movies, and on the Soweto Towers.

Poppy is quick turning into a figurehead in representing black identification, one thing she at all times got down to obtain.
