The College for Good Moms by Jessamine Chan

Frida Liu is a working single mom in a close to future who makes the error of leaving her little one alone at dwelling for a few hours one afternoon. Authorities are summoned by the neighbours, and her daughter Harriet is taken from her. Described by The Guardian in 2015 as “certainly one of this nation’s nice up to date novelists,” British author and educational Hadley has been quietly producing works of subtly highly effective prose for twenty years. Like her latest novels, The Previous (2015) and Late within the Day (2019), Free Love – Hadley’s eighth – explores intimate relationships, sexuality, reminiscence and grief, by way of an apparently ordinary-looking suburban household. Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson

A debut novel, Black Cake tells the backstory of an African-American household of Caribbean origin, and two siblings who’re reunited after eight years of estrangement at their mom’s funeral the place they uncover their uncommon inheritance. The plot is pushed by an omniscient narrator, dialogue and flashbacks. It’s, says the New York Times, filled with “household secrets and techniques, huge lies, nice loves, shiny colors and robust smells”. Auē by Becky Manawatu
